National Professional Qualification for Senior Leadership (NPQSL)

The NPQSL has been developed for leaders who are leading beyond a team within an educational organisation, including schools, nursery schools, pupil referral units (PRUs), secure units, academies and free schools. 

The programme is level 2 of The Leadership Curriculum (TLC).

The programme is suitable for existing and aspiring senior leaders with whole-school responsibilities, including Deputy or assistant heads, Specialist Leaders of Education (SLEs), and senior leaders in a federation with cross-school responsibility. The programme is also suitable for education consultants and for senior leaders in educational organisations who do not hold QTS (for example SBMs/bursars/HR officers).

The programme can be studied by either:

  • Blended learning - face-to-face workshops, facilitated online learning and self-directed study
  • Distance learning - online induction, facilitated online learning and self-directed study

The duration of study is 6-18 months.

Module Descriptions

The Programme includes:

  • A face-to-face induction workshop (Blended Learning model only)
  • Completion of induction and four modules (two essential and two elective)
  • Face-to-face workshops or webinars facilitated by school-based experts
  • Facilitated online learning modules
  • Self-directed study
  • Opportunity to engage in a school improvement task in your home school, over the duration of the programme
  • Final assessment task providing evidence of your learning during the programme and its application to an actual school improvement activity

Can I claim exemption from any NPQSL modules?

What is the cost of the NPQSL programme?

The National College for Teaching and Leadership have committed to funding final assessment for all eligible candidates submitting prior to September 2017. For candidates submitting after this date the assessment fee will be no more than £440.

Can I study a single NPQSL module?

Yes, you can study any NPQSL elective module as a single module (distance learning only). For further information, view School Leadership Online Courses.

Is there any additional support available?

Yes, we offer an additional five hours of face-to-face or telephone/tele-conference coaching by an experienced leadership coach.
